BIO: Born: David A. Adams 9/19 in Baltimore, MD.
I grew up in Harford and Cecil counties... primarily Havre De Grace (near Aberdeen) and Elkton. I'm the oldest of 3 boys, no sisters! My Dad was an Army brat; the oldest of 3 sons, his father, my grand-dad (oldest of 7 sons!) was stationed with Aberdeen Proving Grounds as a Master Sergeant in the Ordnance field. He retired in the mid 70's, and less than a decade later I would swear-in active duty to the US Marine Corps.
My stint was short and sweet as they say.. ok, maybe not so sweet. I went in to the service with the intention of being part of the Marine Corps Band, (having spent the better part of my school experience involved in music at some level) but thanks to an overzealous recruiter putting fresh candidates in technical billets, I wound up working in Avionics, poking around on Harrier (AV-8A, B & C) and A-4 (OA4M) equipment until my discharge in 1985. Once out, I resumed my pursuit of all things musical in a civilian world, playing in various bands and faking my way through my early 20's until I latched on to my first radio gig, unexpectedly, in 1987.

Q: How did you get your nickname?
Back in early 1995, a radio program director dubbed me "IRON DAVE" because of my work ethic- I usually put in 14-15 hour days, EVERY DAY, and I guess the stamina related moniker stuck... I like to stay busy- it keeps me off the streets. Also, 1995 happened to be the year I started training in martial arts with former 96.5 jock Bob "Daddy" Rose, who now works as a morning talk show host in Gainesville. As my sensei, he used to spar with me, and hit me until HIS arms were tired; so he'll laugh and tell you I am IRON Dave . And then, of course my love of motorcyles and riding fits in there, too. Ride hard or stay home! It just fits me, I guess. (laughs)
Q: You work constantly. What's your schedule like? what do you do in your spare time?
A: What spare time? I love what I do in radio; there's something to be said about enjoying your job. I have a pretty packed schedule all week, even when I am not on the air, you can bet I am doing something behind the scenes; I am responsible for keeping track of Bubba's show every weekday morning as the Orlando affiliate producer. I may be the guy back at the studio producing a live remote while Buckley or Hildi are out on the street, or maybe I am the the production studio voicing commercials that you hear on the air!

Saturdays and Sundays I get to rock with you first thing in the morning. That carries right through the middle of my day. I do get time to do special stuff with my kids, David and Amanda.
There are some instances where you might hear David on the air with me. He's a natural. A sharp talker and very smart, Guitar Hero has turned him into a classic rock nut... He loves Aerosmith and is severely into RUSH - his first concert experience - he's even met Geddy and Alex!
SNAKES & ARROWS 2007: (l to r) Rush's ALEX LIFESON; concert pal ROB PAYNE; DAVID CHRISTOPHER, IRON DAVE, Rush's GEDDY LEE
I love the many radio jobs I've done - from rockin' on air to flying in a Cessna 172 and doing airborne traffic (Ive seen most of Orlando and a good part of Central Florida from 1550 feet in the air... need directions somewhere?) Radio has made my life a blast. And people ask why I never take vacations...heheh.
It's also great to meet the music people who created the "soundtrack" we've ALL grown up with, and the non-music people (sports icons, etc...) whose names are woven into our lives. I have a terrific photo album and some great stories for both on and off the air, sharing THAT with listeners makes it all a blast to do.PHOTO GALLERY
When I'm not on the air or producing, I try to find time to keep up with my martial arts training (harder than you might think... I study Torasamado karate, an eclectic american style, and my sensei is in GAINESVILLE.. !). I achieved my 1st degree Black Belt in the system back in 2001, under the tutelage of Bob Rose and direction of Shihan R. William Klase. (So if you're wondering, yes, I do answer to, "Sensei IRON Dave" ). Sadly, the founder of the system, Soke Klase, passed away in 2004. (I found out just before I was to go onstage for a show opening for Marshall Tucker Band). Fortunately, I have lots of video footage of tests and stuff through the years to refer to .
Maybe you'll find me on a motorcycle (I love cruisers). If you ride, I have TWO words for you: TURN SIGNALS! It'll save your life! If you DON'T ride, I have some words for YOU too: WATCH FOR BIKES! We bikers are always watching car drivers, do us a favor and keep your eyes open when we're around, ok?
When I am out on the road, I love to find good restaurants with tasty home style cooking... or a worthwhile barbecue joint with huge helpings of smoky meat! I've hit 'em all- Sonny's, Keller's, Fat Boys, Porkie's, Shane's, Bubbalou's... got a place you can recommend?
You might find me out doing something music related. I perform as a vocalist and guitarist, and I still write & record songs occasionally. I love performing, I've been singing as far back as I can remember. I seem to recall an incident in third grade music class that really encouraged me. Ask me about it next time you and I are hanging out...
Sometimes I get a wild hair and will grab a book on a subject of interest (I also dig fishing, photography, NASCAR, space program/NASA and the NFL, among other things) and immerse myself. But remember no matter how much you read, the most important book to read: The Bible! Seriously...NOTHING you do or accomplish in life is possible without God.
My sports preferences: NFL - Baltimore RAVENS (almost got to the dance in 2009...thanks a lot, Pittsburgh!) College Footbal/Basketball - Florida Gators MLB - < Baltimore Orioles ... although it's been pretty dismal since Cal retired... NASCAR - I really like Dale Jr (#88) and Mark Martin (#5). NHL - Philly Flyers NBA - Orlando MAGIC
Q: What is the story behind "Dreams I'll Never See" by Molly Hatchet? You've said on the air it has become your "signature song".

A: Well, that one has an interesting history... years ago coming up through high school I remember seeing Molly Hatchet T shirts with the Frank Frazetta artwork and thought it was cool, the art, the name of the band, you know... and so I scoped out the band's first album and I was hooked. Now, I was into everything musically then, seriously; I would listen to a shredding Scorpions album or Judas Priest record just as much as I would KISS or Hatchet or even classical music, because in high school I was learning to actually WRITE music and so it was kind of imperative that I listen to arrangement and all of that. Anyway, fast forward to 1996 or so; former WHTQ afternoon jock Mark Samansky had a little band thing he did, and I was hanging out with him and former Hatchet bassist Riff West to do a benefit show raising money for the Humane Society. The gig was set up in the parking lot of the [Amway] Arena. I had no plans to go onstage, but Riff asked me if I knew "Dreams", and of course, I had heard it hundreds of times...
I had just never actually performed it...
So I get onstage, and basically botch it... it taught me a lesson to never get onstage without rehearsing! But it was funny, because I went back and learned the song AND the guitar parts, and now I can do it flawlessly. I still see Riff from time to time and we joke about it, and it's nice to know if anyone ever needed me to step in and sing it (or any Hatchet song) I could do it now. One of the coolest moments in my life was getting on stage in New Smyrna at the Speedway for Bike Week 2002, and singing with the original 3 guitarists of Molly Hatchet (Dave Hlubek, Duane Roland and Steve Holland) just one of many cherished memories I have attached to my love for the Southern Rock genre.... I have some cool video of me onstage in Ocala with Duane and Steve along with Jakson Spires and Charlie Hargrett from BLACKFOOT that may see the light of day here on whtq.com... if i can ever get it transferred to digital... Of course a year later I would be invited to co-found and front Diablo Canyon and spent the next three years opening for bands like 38 Special, Marshall Tucker, Blackfoot, Hatchet, Diamond Rio, Georgia Satellites, etc... it was a very cool ride, I must admit.
The history:
1999-2000: Guest vocalist with Orlando club act The MOONLIGHTERS
2001-2002: Guitarist /vocalist with Orlando's THE ALLMOST BROTHERS BAND
2003-2005: Founding lead vocalist for DIABLO CANYON
2006-07: Guitarist/Vocalist with KINGSTREET
2007-08: Vocalist for JAKSON COUNTY
So... NOW WHAT....?
It was bound to happen. The original lineup of the band recently reconvened and we've discussed plans now for a run of dates this summer into the fall. Some minor changes have been made but the quality of the performances will speak for itself. Keep an eye out for updates here periodically and watch for the band's site to resurface.. We're going to bring back the blistering performances of blues flavored Southern Rock you might remember us for.. and we'll have some new stuff for you as well!
If you'd like us to perform for your event, contact me via the email link here and just put "PERFORM" in the subject line of your e-mail... and THANKS!
